One night in August 2013, the world was introduced to a new Miley Cyrus, a tongue-wagging, twerking and spotlight-hogging Cyrus who is still with us. Two years later, she’s about to host the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards and is already reflecting on her career-changing moment. While many were shocked, one person definitely wasn’t: Donald Trump.
In an interview with The New York Times, Cyrus revealed that she was staying at the Trump Hotel that night and got a call from Trump himself. She claims that, at that moment, she wasn’t aware that her twerking had become a big deal yet.
“I was staying at the Trump Hotel and Donald Trump literally called and said, basically, ‘I know everyone’s talking about it, but I loved it.’ I had no idea anyone was talking about it yet,” Cyrus said.
Even though Cyrus still does plenty of outrageous things, she told the Times that whenever she watches that performance, she sees “someone that isn’t me now.”
“I knew who I was, and I knew the power that I held, but I don’t think I realized my full power until that show,” she told the Times. “I didn’t realize I could make such a big reaction. I didn’t think that many people would care. I knew I was famous, but I didn’t know what that meant. Everything was coming to an end and starting a new beginning. In every way.”
Cyrus is hosting this year’s VMAs, which air live on Sunday from Los Angeles. Executive producer Garrett English said this week that Cyrus has “free reign,” so expect it to be one wild night.
