One of the many Jesse Owens biopics in the works will be hitting theaters in February. Focus Features has decided to release Race on Feb. 19, 2016.
The film was originally supposed to be released on April 8, which was also set to feature four other big releases, including George Clooney’s Money Monster and Melissa McCarthy’s Michelle Darnell. Instead, it will hit theaters against Barbershop 3 and Naomi Watts’ Shut In, reports TheWrap.
Race stars Stephan James, who played John Lewis in Selma, as the famous athlete who competed at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. He went on to win four Gold medals, smashing Adolf Hitler’s plans to put Aryan supremacy on display.
The cast also includes Jason Sudeikis, Jeremy Irons, William Hurt and Carice van Houten. It was directed by Emmy winner Stephen Hopkins (House of Lies) and written by Anna Waterhouse and Joe Shrapnel. The Owens family gave the film their seal of approval.
This is not the only Owens biopic in the works. Anthony Mackie is set to star in one, which is now in danger since it was set up at the now-bankrupt Relativity Media. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is also working on Triumph.
