Cary Fukunaga had been developing a new film adaptation of Stephen King’s novel IT for years, but he surprisingly jumped ship on Memorial Day weekend, only weeks before cameras were set to roll. While Warner Bros.’ New Line has already found a new director, Fukunaga never spoke about his decision, until this week.
It had been suggested by TheWrap, which first reported that the True Detective Season One director clashed over the budget with New Line and possibly wasn’t happy with casting. Will Poulter, 22, was cast as Pennywise before Fukunaga left, even though Ben Mendelsohn, 46, was reportedly in the running for the same role.
Fukunaga told Entertainment Weekly that he has come to terms with the fact that he won’t direct IT, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be disappointed.
“Ultimately, we and New Line have to agree on the kind of movie we want to make, and we just wanted to make different movies,” the Jane Eyre director said. “It’s like a relationship: you can try to make the other person who you want them to be, but it’s impossible really to change. You just have to work.”
Just weeks after Fukunaga left, New Line hired Andy Muschietti, who directed the surprise horror hit Mama with Jessica Chastain, to helm IT. It has been rumored that the studio still wants to make a two-part film.
Fukunaga’s Beasts of No Nation will be released on Oct.16 in limited theaters. It will also be posted on Netflix the same day.
