Empire is such a big success for Fox that the network is hoping to turn it into a literal empire. Co-creator Lee Daniels, who is already working on a second, non-Empire related music series, said that there could be a prequel series to Empire.

The new series would examine the life of Cookie, Taraji P. Henson’s character, and her family. Daniels was really excited about getting a chance to further explore the character.
“Without question,” Daniels said when asked about a spin-off, notes The Associated Press. “There's so much ripe story that we've talked about already, about Cookie's family, what makes her her. That in itself is fascinating to me.”
Executive producer Brian Grazer later explained to the AP that a spin-off will only happen if the main show can “stay authentic.”
The comments came at the Television Critics Association Press Tour, where Fox also announced that it ordered a pilot for Star, another musical drama Daniels is working on. Star will be set in Atlanta with new characters, but Fox TV chairman and CEO Dana Walden hinted that there could be an Empire/Star crossover.
As for Empire itself, Pitbull, Mariah Carey, Chris Rock, Ludacris, Marisa Tomei, Alicia Keys and Kelly Rowland are all set to guest star in season two. The first trailer for season two was also unveiled on Thursday.
Empire, which also stars Terrence Howard, will return on Sept. 23 at 9 p.m. The new season will run 18 episodes, with nine debuting this fall.
