Ted Cruz battles New York Times over book missing from bestseller list

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is now in a battle with the New York Times, which left his book A Time For Truth, off its latest bestseller list. The newspaper claimed that the book was bought in bulk, but Amazon and publisher HarperCollins have refuted that claim.

Back on Thursday, Times spokesperson Eileen Murphy told Politico that the paper told HarperCollins that it didn’t fit the “uniform standards that we apply to our best seller list, which includes an analysis of book sales that goes beyond simply the number of books sold.”

Murphy further explained, “In the case of this book, the overwhelming preponderance of evidence was that sales were limited to strategic bulk purchases.”

However, HarperCollins publicity director Tina Andreadis later told Buzzfeed that there was no evidence of bulk purchases. She noted that it has also ranked high on Nielsen Bookscan, The Wall Street Journal and Barnes & Noble lists, which also remove bulk orders.

“As of yesterday, 'A Time for Truth' was the number 13 best-selling book, and there is no evidence of unusual bulk purchase activity in our sales data,” Amazon’s Sarah Gelman told Politico today.

Nielsen Bookscan data shows that the book sold 11,854 copies in its first week, which means that it should have appeared at No. 3 on the hardcover nonfiction list. The book is likely going to sell more as this fight between Cruz and the Times continues.

“The Times is presumably embarrassed by having their obvious partisan bias called out. But their response—alleging ‘strategic bulk purchases’—is a blatant falsehood,” Cruz campaign spokesperson Rick Tyler told Politico. “The evidence is directly to the contrary. In leveling this false charge, the Times has tried to impugn the integrity of Senator Cruz and of his publisher Harper Collins.”

Cruz is currently one of 15 Republicans running for the party’s nomination for the oval office.
