Michael Keaton and J. K. Simmons left Legendary's King Kong prequel a few weeks ago, but the studio is now in talks to sign on two new stars.
According to The Wrap, Russell Crowe is in talks to star in Kong: Skull Island. Brie Larson is also being eyed to play the female lead in the film.
Deadline is reporting that Crowe is still waiting to read a new draft of the script, but he's currently Legendary's top pick for the role. Crowe and Larson would be starring opposite Tom Hiddleston, who signed on back in September.
The future of Legendary's monster movie was left up in the air earlier this month when Michael Keaton and J.K. Simmons both left the project, apparently due to scheduling conflicts as we previously reported.
Not much is known about the plot of the film yet, but we know it will be some sort of King Kong prequel following a group of explorers who travel to Kong's home island. Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) will be directing, and the the screenplay was written by John Gatins and Max Borenstein. Universal is hoping to start production on the movie late this year or early next year, with a release date scheduled for March 10, 2017.
