Kevin Smith was famously moved to tears when he visited the set of Star Wars: The Force Awakens last year. He brought up that moment again at Comic-Con and revealed exactly what it was that made him cry.
During an interview with The Los Angeles Times, the Clerks filmmaker said that “what I saw was not only beguiling but spellbinding.” He again stressed that much of the set was physically built and very little green screen.
Smith got to actually step into the Millennium Falcon set, which is what really made him tear up.
“When I was a kid, I liked 'Star Wars,' and now I’m on the 'Star Wars' set. This is kind of cool. The moment I stepped on the Millennium Falcon 10 years dropped off my life,” Smith explained. “Suddenly I was in my 30s, and I hadn’t done ‘Cop Out,’ and I was like, 'Oh, this is awesome.' And then another 10 years dropped off, and I was in my 20s making all those movies people like, referencing ‘Star Wars’ like crazy and stuff. And then another step up the ramp, and I was in my 10s and lower, when I fell in love with this stuff, when it was my religion, when I was a kid.”
When he started crying, director J.J. Abrams’ assistant thought he didn’t like it, but that wasn’t true of course.
Last summer, Smith posted a selfie on Instagram, showing his tears from the film’s London set. “The Force is WITH this movie. Holy Sith,” he wrote.
In another interview last year about the set visit, Smith also said that he saw real Stormtroopers and real explosions.
The rest of us will get to see what Smith was talking about when the movie hits theaters on Dec. 18.
