Pop culture continues to make an impact on the names adults give their children and Disney’s Frozen seems to have a bigger impact than any other recent movie. More girls are being named Elsa in the U.S. and some boys have even been stuck with the name Olaf thanks to Frozen fans.
The Social Security Administration released the list of the Top 1,000 baby names from the past year. As the New York Times points out, the data shows that Elsa has cracked the Top 500 for the first time since 1917. It is now the 286th most common name, with over 1,000 Elsas born last year.
Even though Anna is the real hero in the film, her name hasn’t experienced the same kind of boom. Then again, Anna is a much more common name so it is all the way up at No. 34.
Parents who love Frozen have even named their sons after Olaf, the snowman who loves warm weather. There were 22 babies named Olaf last year, up from nine. Kristoff also experienced a nice boost, with 32 boys named after the male lead character of the film born last year.
And if you want to name your child after a reindeer, you won’t be alone. Fifty-five Svens were born last year, up from 55 the year before. Sadly, 132 baby boys were also named after the evil Prince Hans.
The last time Disney had such an influence on parents was in 2012, when Pixar’s Brave hit theaters. That year, over 100 baby girls were named Merida.
Frozen hit theaters back in November 2013 and is still making money for Disney. A ride will open at EPCOT soon.
