George Coe, a longtime character actor who was recently heard on the FX animated series Archer, has died. He was 86.
Variety reports that he died in Santa Monica, California following a long illness.
Coe’s movie and television career dates back to the 1960s, although the Queens, New York-born actor made his Broadway debut in 1957. In 1968, he was nominated for the Best Live Action Short Oscar for The Dove, a parody of Ingmar Bergman’s films.
His film credits include Kramer vs. Kramer, The Stepford Wives, Head Office, The Mighty Ducks and Funny People.
Coe was busier on television and was actually a cast member on the first season of Saturday Night Live, appearing in nine episodes, notes Zap2It. Other TV roles included Star Trek: The Next Generation, The West Wing, Columbo, Bones, The Golden Girls, Judging amy and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Younger TV viewers will recognize his voice as Woodhouse, Archer’s manservant on Archer.
Coe was also a major supporter of the Screen Actors Guild and was on the national board of directors for 12 years. He was awarded the Ralph Morgan Award from the Hollywood chapter in 2009.
