Comcast announces new streaming TV service with boring name

This morning, Comcast announced a new streaming, online television service that customers will have access to. Since they couldn’t come up with a cooler name, executives just went with “Stream.”

Comcast said that Xfinity Internet subscribers will not need any additional equipment to access the service on their televisions. The service will include over a dozen live streaming networks, including HBO, which will be available on laptops, tablets and phones. There will also be thousands of On Demand titles and access to a cloud DVR and TV Everywhere.

The new service will cost $15 a month and launches in Boston before the end of the summer. Chicago and Seattle are next and it should be available everywhere by early next year.

“It’s an exciting time to be a TV fan – there is more quality content than ever and seemingly limitless ways to keep up with all the shows and movies people are talking about,” Comcast said. “We’ll continue to experiment by creating offerings like Stream, so that users can choose the service that works best for them. So if you love TV and spend most of your time with the screen in your lap as opposed to the one on the wall, Stream may just be the thing for you.”

The service comes as individual networks have started launching their own stand-alone streaming apps for Roku, Amazon Fire and other streaming devices that have allowed thousands to cut the cord. If the cable companies hope to stop losing even more customers, they will have to offer alternatives like this to allow subscribers to watch networks on other devices.
