Universal hasn’t done a lot to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Back to the Future, but the studio finally made up for it today with the announcement we’ve been waiting for forever. We can finally retire our VCRs because the Back to the Future animated series will be released on DVD in October.
All 26 episodes of the series will be included in a new DVD collection, although the episodes will sadly not be released on Blu-ray. I guess we can’t have everything. The set will also include a new interview with BTTF co-writer Bob Gale and writer John Ludin, plus a stills gallery.
Two episodes of the show will be included as a “teaser” on a bonus disc included in the new 30th anniversary box set of the film trilogy as well.
The BTTF series ran from 1991 to 1993, just after Back to the Future Part III left theaters. In addition to the animated adventures that paired Marty with Doc Brown’s children, Christopher Lloyd contributed Bill Nye The Science Guy-style live action sequences for some episodes. Both Mary Steenburgen and Thomas Wilson reprised their roles from the films.
If you don’t have the BTTF movies on Blu-ray yet for whatever reason, you can get the big Back tot the Future: The Complete Adventures gift set, which includes the animated series, the three films, the bonus disc, a 64-page book and a light-up Flux Capacitor package.
Universal will also release Robert Zemeckis’ original BTTF in theaters again on Oct. 21. Universal Music Group will re-release the soundtrack on vinyl on Oct. 16. The animated series and the new 30th anniversary box set will be out on Oct. 20.
