Nikolaj Arcel, who helped bring expansive The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo to the big screen in Sweden, is reportedly being considered to rewrite and direct Sony’s The Dark Tower. The film will be the first one based on Stephen King’s book series.
Hollywood has been trying to turn The Dark Tower into a movie or TV series for years. After both Warner Bros. and Universal struggled to put a film based on the first book, The Gunslinger, together, the project moved to Sony in April. Media Rights Capital also joined the project and MRC hopes to create a companion TV series.
Deadline reported on Monday that Arcel was being considered for the ambitious project. Arcel is best known for co-writing the Swedish version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and directing the Oscar-nominated A royal Affair with Mads Mikkelsen. He is also working on an adaptation of Don Winslow’s The Power of the Fog.
Arcel is a big fan of The Dark Tower books, even teaching himself how to read English show he could read the original versions of King’s novels. The series centers on gunslinger Roland Deschain, a role that has yet to be cast.
King is producing with Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Eric Huggins and Akiva Goldsman.
