While every Star Wars fan knows that Han Solo shot Greedo first in the original Star Wars, George Lucas has tried to convince us that we didn’t see that. But an early copy of the script was discovered in New Brunswick, Canada of all places that does show that Lucas did have Han shoot first initially.
Kristian Brown was digging through the sci-fi collection at the University of New Brunswick Library in Saint John, when he discovered what looks like an original shooting script for the film. Like most surprising discoveries, Brown told CBC News that he wasn’t even looking for it when he found it.
The script, a fourth edition revised copy, was dated March 15, 1976, over a year before the film came out in May 1977. Brown managed to get a hold of Lucasfilm Publicity, which said that it could just be a copy of the real script or “fan-made” for sale at conventions. But Brown doesn’t really care about the monetary value of it.
“No matter how many new things are made, it all basically came from this first thing. And it's just good to look back at the origins of the entire thing and not forget, you know, what came first,” he said.
The script also has some early versions of character names that fans have known for decades (like Starkiller instead of Skywalker), but Brown was excited to see that the script does say that Han did shoot Greedo first. The 1997 “Special Edition” was altered to make it look like Greedo shot first.
"I'll tell you one thing, right now,” Brown told CBC News. “Based on the script, I can tell you 100 per cent, Han shot first.”
