Showtime follows HBO's example with stand-alone streaming service

Showtime has just given cable and satellite subscribers yet another reason to cut the cord. The premium cable network, which is owned by CBS, announced today that it will launch its own stand-alone streaming service. It will be timed with the return of Ray Donovan and Masters of Sex next month.

The Showtime app, which doesn’t have a fancy name like HBO Now, will be available first on Apple products before expanding to other systems like Roku and XBox One. It will cost $10.99 a month, which is actually cheaper than HBO Now.

“Going over-the-top means Showtime will be much more accessible to tens of millions of potential new subscribers,” CBS Corporation CEO Les Moonves said in a statement. “Across CBS, we are constantly finding new ways to monetize our programming by capitalizing on opportunities presented by technology. This works best when you have outstanding premium content – like we do at Showtime – and when you have a terrific partner like Apple – which continues to innovate and build upon its loyal customer base.”

Moonves teased the Showtime app in March.

HBO Now also launched first on Apple products in April and costs $14.99 a month. Like HBO Now, the Showtime app will include unlimited access to past Showtime series, movies and even sports programs. There will also be a live feed of Showtime’s east and west coast channels.

CBS Corp. also has a streaming service for CBS called CBS All Access.

The new seasons of Ray Donovan and Masters of Sex begin on July 13. Showtime is also home to Homeland, Happyish and The Affair.
