A sandbar shark died in a crash as it was being transported by truck from Florida to a new residence at an aquarium in New York.
WESH reported that accident occurred when a tractor-trailer carrying four sharks blew out a tire while traveling on I-95 shortly before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Volusia County. The blow out caused the truck to run off the highway and into a wooded area.
There were three passengers in the vehicle, but none of them were injured.
"(The) tire blew out and we ended up in the ditch here,” said passenger Frank Young. “Accidents happen. We're just glad everyone is OK.”
Unfortunately, one of the big fish being transferred from Marathon to Coney Island died after it was ejected from its tank during the accident.
A team from Sea World was called in to tend to the other three sharks, which were taken to the Orlando park. They are said to be in good condition at this time.
New transportation arrangements are being made.
