Rooney Mara in talks for David Fincher's ‘Utopia’ HBO series

David Fincher directed Rooney Mara to a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her work in his The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo adaptation and now they might get to work together again. Mara is reportedly in talks with HBO to star in his Utopia series.

The news was broken by TheWrap’s Jeff Sneider on Twitter. Sneider didn’t do a full report, only teasing that Mara is in talks.

Utopia was first announced in February 2014 and will reteam him with Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn. She will write the pilot and Fincher will direct every episode of the first season.

This is actually a remake of the Channel 4 U.K. series of the same name, created by Dennis Kelly. The plot centers on a group of fans of a graphic novel. When they learn that the author wrote a secret sequel, they go on the hunt for the manuscript only to discover that the book has some sinister secrets.

While it’s not clear what role she will have, Collider suggests that it could be Jessica Hynde, the author’s daughter.

The news comes just after it was reported earlier this month that HBO and Fincher shut down production on his other project, Video Synchronicity (or Videosyncrazy). That series is about the music video industry in the 1980s. Production was stalled after filming started on the fourth episode, possibly to rethink the show’s creative direction.

Mara was just seen in the Cannes hit Carol, which earned her the festival’s Best Actress prize. That movie, co-starring Cate Blanchett, will hit theaters on Dec. 18. She also plays Tiger Lily in Warner Bros.’ Pan.
