Ron Moody, the British actor who first played the role of Fagin in Lionel Bart’s musical Oliver! and was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in the film, has died. He was 91.
His widow, Therese, told the BBC that he will be “greatly missed,” adding that, “He brought joy to his family and to the hearts of many and will be greatly missed. He was singing until the end.”
Moody was born in London on Jan. 8, 1924 to Jewish immigrants. He initially studied to be an economist, but decided to pursue acting in his late 20s.
Although Moody starred in several other movies and TV series, his best-known contribution to the entertainment world was his role as Fagin, which he said he was “destined” to play. Much like the character in Charles Dicken’s Oliver Twist, Fagin was the leader of the group of kids who made a living as pickpockets. He played the role in London and Broadway before the film.
Carol Reed’s 1968 film adaptation of the play won the 1968 Best Picture and Best Director Oscars. Both Fagin and child star Jack Wild were nominated for Best Supporting Actor, although neither won.
Even after the film, he continued playing the part. Variety notes that he starred in the 1984 Broadway revival and even earned a Tony.
Moody is survived by his wife and six children.
