'Pitch Perfect 3' is happening, Universal in talks with writer Kay Cannon

Even though the story of the Barden Bellas has no right to continue, Universal is still going to keep the a cappella cash cow going by making a Pitch Perfect 3. The studio is already in talks with the writer of the past two and Elizabeth Banks is serious about making it.

Last week, Banks - who co-produced the first film and directed the second - told Access Hollywood that the studio is “thinking about it very seriously.”

"Of course we're at the very beginning of that process,” Banks explained. “We would love to spend more time with these characters that everyone's fallen so hard in love with.”

Today, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Universal and Gold Circle are in talks with Kay Cannon to write the third one after also wrote the first two. It’s still not clear if Banks would direct the third film.

The original Pitch Perfect was a surprise hit in 2012 and made even more money on home video and through its soundtrack. The second one, released just last month, is already up to $160.9 million domestically. Even before it came out, Rebel Wilson said that she had already signed up for PP 3, but wasn’t sure if Anna Kendrick had. (Kendrick was actually a bit apprehensive about doing a second one, but was eventually convinced.)

Jason Moore directed the first film, which earned surprising critical praise. However, Pitch Perfect 2 earned mixed reviews. The film practically tells the same story as the first one, so where a third film could go is unknown, especially since the Bellas all graduated.
