The writer who was responsible for Cara Delevingne’s Vogue cover story, Rob Haskell, is facing backlash from the LGBT community for his choice of words when describing her relationships with women.
In the piece, Delevingne talks about her girlfriend, Annie Clarke, and the complicated nature of her attraction towards both sexes.
Haskell’s line, "Her parents seem to think girls are just a phase for Cara, and they may be correct” is striking a chord with those in the LGBT community, who say it’s damaging in nature.
Julie Rodriguez has since started a Care2.org petition called “Tell Vogue Magazine: Being LGBT Isn't a ‘Phase’!” which has over 13,000 signatures. The petition demands that Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour apologize for publishing the “harmful” comments.
“As a bisexual woman myself, I’ve experienced hurtful comments like this many times. People are quick to assume queer women’s identities are a ‘phase’ and to refuse to recognize the important relationships in their lives -- an attitude which can cause depression, result in families rejecting their daughters (or forcing them into abusive conversion “therapy”), and even put young women at risk of suicide,” Rodriguez wrote.
Delevingne did say in the interview, "I think that being in love with my girlfriend is a big part of why I’m feeling so happy with who I am these days.”
