Kenneth Branagh in talks for new ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ adaptation

Kenneth Branagh, who just had an international success with Disney’s Cinderella, is reportedly in talks with 20th Century Fox to direct a new film adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express.

The news was first reported by TheWrap and was also reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

This new adaptation is being written by Michael Green (who is also co-showrunning the just green-lit American Gods) and will be produced by Simon Kinberg, Mark Gordon and Ridley Scott. Green is also working on the script for Scott’s Blade Runner sequel.

Christie’s 1934 novel centers on the murder of an American tycoon on a train. The author’s famous detective Hercule Poirot is tasked with solving the mystery, even though some of the passengers aren’t exactly helpful.

There’s a long history of adaptations of the story, since it is Christie’s most famous Poirot novel. Sidney Lumet directed the acclaimed 1974 version, which starred Albert Finney as the detective. In 2010, David Suchet, who has played Poirot on U.K. television since 1989, starred in a TV adaptation, which also featured Tobey Jones and Jessica Chastain. There was also a 2001 TV movie that aired on CBS and starred Alfred Molina as Poirot.

Like many of those past adaptations, this new film version is expected to draw an all-star cast, although no one is attached yet.

Branagh has recently been doing big-budget Hollywood work, having directed Thor, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit and Cinderella as of late. He was nominated for the Best Director Oscar back in 1990 for Hamlet V.
