After focusing pretty heavily on the familiar worlds and creatures in the first two films, the next Star Trek is going to be bringing something fresh to the franchise.
In an interview with Deadline, director Justin Lin said that Star Trek 3 will be all new and fresh, not based on any previous Star Trek stories.
"The Klingons, Romulans and other species are great, but it’s time to go further," he said. "It has been fun to focus on creating whole new worlds and species."
This will be refreshing to fans who felt that the past two Star Trek movies were too heavily based on retreading old material, like Star Trek Into Darkness playing off of The Wrath of Khan. It sounds like with this new one, we'll finally be getting some brand new creatures rather than seeing the same thing we've already seen before.
The new Star Trek will follow the crew of the enterprise as they begin their five year mission that we see in the TV show. Writer Simon Pegg has said that the new movie hopes to capture the feeling of optimism and fun that was present in the show, as we previously reported.
Star Trek 3, which is rumored to be titled Star Trek Beyond, hits theaters on July 8, 2016.
