Last week ended with an incredible moment for the LGBT community, with the Supreme Court ruling that same-sex marriage is now legal in all 50 states. But during last night’s episode of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver took time to pay attention just to the leaps made by the Transgender community and the struggles they still face.

“Even when the news media are trying to be supportive, they can still make dumb mistakes,” Oliver noted, before showing clips of talk show hosts asking transgender people incredibly personal questions. These are questions that would not be ok to ask anyone!
Oliver then explained what “transgender” actually means, noting that it deals with gender identity, not sexual orientation. “Some transgender people do undergo hormone therapy or sex reassignment surgery as part of their transition,” Oliver said. “And interestingly enough, their decision on this matter is, medically speaking, none of your f**king business!”
When it comes to what to call transgender people, Oliver notes that we can call them whatever they want to be called. After all, if we can agree to call Sean Combs all the different names he’s liked, we can call a transgender person whatever he or she wants to be called.
Oliver also went over other challenges the transgender community faces every day, proving that their fight is hardly over.
