A homeless man in South Florida lost nearly $10,000 after he left it on a bus bench, but thanks to two good Samaritans that found it the funds were returned to him.
The Sun Sentinel reported that the homeless man, identified only as Joe, inherited the cash after one of his relatives passed away. He withdrew almost $10,000 from a bank on June 1 and went shopping for some items, but he forgot two bags, which contained envelopes with the money, on a bus bench at Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.
"He knew it was left there, but he figured by the time he thought about going back to get it, it would be gone," said Detective Danny Mursell.
Joe’s money may have been gone had it not been for one honest man and one Broward County sheriff's deputy coming across it.
John Harbett was on volunteer beach patrol when he saw an envelope with $3,900 and turned it in to authorities. Later that morning, Deputy Ben Koos spotted the bags of merchandise left behind with another envelope inside stuffed with $5600 and brought that to the sheriff’s office.
Investigators were then able to locate Joe using the store receipts and checking surveillance footage from those retailers to get an image of him.
The money and merchandise were returned to him and he said he is looking forward to moving to Pennsylvania where he has family.
