The fifth season finale of HBO’s Game of Thrones aired last night, so someone major had to die. In the end though, several characters ended up getting offed, including Kit Harrington’s Jon Snow character. It does prove that no one is safe in the show, if you still haven’t figured that out already.
Since this is a fantasy show, there is always a chance that there could be some way to bring back deceased characters. However, Harrington insisted that his Jon Snow will definitely not be making some ghostly comeback.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Harrington said that showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff told him that his time on the show is done.
“They sat me down and said, ‘This is how it is,’” Harrington said. “If anything in the future is not like that, then I don’t know about it – it’s only in David and Dan and [author George R.R. Martin’s] heads. But I’ve been told I’m dead. I’m dead. I’m not coming back next season. So that’s all I can tell you, really.”
Harrington said that, at first, he was surprised that he was getting killed by the Night’s Watch in the way he was, but still “loved” the way it went down. He did know that the character was going to die, since Jon Snow was killed in Martin’s A Dance with Dragons book.
“I didn’t realize it would be the final shot of the season and that made it extra special,” he told EW. “It’s always kind of nice really when you’re the last thing that happens in that episode. I dunno, I loved it. I loved how they brought Olly in to be the person who kills me. I love how the storyline with Thorne was wrapped up.”
In an interview with the Daily News, Harrington also confirmed that Jon Snow is “quite dead,” adding, “It's over for Jon Snow — at the very least, he gets to join his family and kin and leave this terrible world behind.”
