Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry to run for president, hopes to leave 2012 mistakes behind

Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry seemed like a legitimate candidate for president in 2012, but then his infamous debate mistake lead to a campaign flameout. He’s going to try to leave all his 2012 mistakes in the past though, as he’s running for the Oval Office once again.

Early this morning, Perry launched his Perry For President website, which featured a video about his life, career and plans for the country. According to Fox News, he is set to make a formal announcement during an event in Dallas today.

Perry served a record 14 years as Texas Governor, succeeding President George W. Bush in 2001. He seemed like a serious candidate in 2012 until he forgot the third federal agency he planned to shut down as president and then said “Oops.” The moment summed up his campaign and he eventually lost the GOP nomination to Mitt Romney.

This time, Perry isn’t going to be considered a frontrunner at the start. And as the Los Angeles Times points out, he was indicted in Texas due to accusations of abusing his power while governor. Perry tried to have the charges tossed, but a Republican judge refused to do so.

Perry is the 10th Republican to seek the party’s nomination and second to join the race this week. South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham launched his campaign on Monday.
