Disney is reportedly planning on remaking Sister Act, the hit comedy starring Whoopi Goldberg.
The new film will be written by Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Karen McCullah, who have also worked on Legally Blonde, The House Bunny and She’s The Man, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Cinderella producer Allison Shearmur is producing the film.
It’s not clear if this will be a continuation of the events in the original 1992 film from Disney’s Touchstone Pictures label and 1993’s Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit or if this is a complete remake.
Goldberg starred in the original films, along with Maggie Smith and Harvey Keitel. Goldberg played a lounge singer who hides from the mob in a convent as a nun.
The original Sister Act grossed $232 million worldwide, notes Variety, and also spawned a Broadway musical.
This is the second new project of the day for Disney. Early today, it was reported that the studio has started work on a film based on the “Night on Bald Mountain” segment in Fantasia that will be written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.
