Cameron Crowe is extending an apology to anyone he offended for casting Emma Stone in Aloha when her character was meant to be Asian-American.
Stone plays Allison Ng, whose father is half-Chinese and half-Hawaiian, but Stone's appearance is fully Caucasian.
To give a bit more insight into who Allison was supposed to be, he wrote in his blog The Uncool she was written to be a "super-proud ¼ Hawaiian who was frustrated that, by all outward appearances, she looked nothing like one."
Crowe wrote that he’s “grateful for the dialogue” and takes the brunt of the backlash, mainly from the Media Action Network for Asian Americans.
“I offer you a heart-felt apology to all who felt this was an odd or misguided casting choice,” he wrote.
“If any part of her fine characterization has caused consternation and controversy, I am the one to blame,” he wrote, later adding, “From the many voices, loud and small, I have learned something very inspiring. So many of us are hungry for stories with more racial diversity, more truth in representation, and I am anxious to help tell those stories in the future.”
Aloha turned out to be what many would consider to be a flop and Crowe even started his piece acknowledging it’s been plagued since the Sony hack last year when Amy Pascal was revealed as wildly opposed to it, calling it a “misunderstood movie” since then.
