A&E announced today that Bates Motel has been renewed for two more seasons. The show will soon be the only scripted show left on the network, since The Returned has also been cancelled.
Bates Motel is a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, with Freddie Highmore starring as Norman Bates and Vera Farmiga as his mother. Olivia Cooke, Max Thieriot and Nestor Carbonell co-star. The network ordered 20 more episodes in total, which will air in 2016.
“The vision of our incredible creative team has exposed the steady breakdown of the relationship between Norman and Norma Bates,” Rob Sharenow, Executive Vice President and General Manager, A&E and Lifetime, said in a statement. “We are thrilled to bring fans two more seasons to witness the next stages of Norman's transformation into the most notorious psychopath in cinematic history.”
The series is a Universal TV production, with Kerry Ehrin and Carlton Cuse as executive producers. Farmiga has been nominated for an Emmy for her performance on the show.
This did not go so well for The Returned, a remake of the acclaimed French series, which failed to earn any buzz or traction with viewers. As Deadline points out, Returned only drew 945,000 viewers for its only season finale, while Bates Motel’s most recent finale had 1.7 million.
A&E is also developing another series based on a classic film - Damien, based on The Omen. That project originated at sister network Lifetime.
