An unexploded bomb from World War II was found near Wembley Stadium in London Thursday. The Army, which was called in to defuse the bomb which had been sitting there for over 70 years, said it did actually pose “a genuine risk to life.”

The bomb weighed 50 kg (110 lbs) and was probably dropped during the Nazi air raids that battered London in the early 1940s. According to Sky News, construction workers discovered the bomb while working near Wembley.
Around 300 homes and businesses in the area were evacuated, including a television studio. People who live in the area were allowed home late Friday.
“Arrangements have been made to take the bomb to a detonation site outside London,” Metropolitan Police Chief Superintendent Mickey Gallagher told Sky News. “Although it doesn't seem like a massive bomb... It does pose a very real threat.”
BBC News reports that soccer playoffs will go on as scheduled this weekend.

Although the war has been over for 70 years, it isn’t too uncommon for unexploded bombs to be found throughout Europe. The London Standard notes that there was another unexploded bomb found in Bermondsey in south London in March. That bomb weighed 250 kg (551 lbs) and was destroyed in Kent.
