Even though the movie was a box office flop, a sequel to the Farrelly Brothers’ poorly-reviewed The Three Stooges is in the works. The original trio is set to return and the producers hope that an action star will actually get people interested.
Sean Hayes, Chris Diamantopoulos and Will Sasso will all return to play Larry, Moe and Curly. According to Deadline, it will be produced by C3 Entertainment, The Exchange and Grand Peaks Entertainment. Cameron Fay, who wrote Taran Killam’s upcoming Brother-In-Law, was picked to write the script.
The first film grossed just $54 million worldwide (with $44 million of that coming from North America) when it hit theaters in April 2012. C3 hopes that adding an action star will get international audiences interested.
As TheWrap notes, C3 is the owner of the Three Stooges name and licensing. 20th Century Fox, which co-produced the original film, doesn’t appear to be involved in the sequel.
“We’re excited to be moving forward with The Exchange and Grand Peaks on the next Three Stooges movie. With Sean, Chris and Will back as our Stooges and Cameron writing, this next film will be a truly unique blend of fast paced action with the hilarious mayhem of The Three Stooges,” C3’s Earl Benjamin and Robert Benjamin said in a statement.
Of course, instead of waiting for a new Three Stooges movie, you could just watch the actual Stooges in action.
