Tatum O’Neal and her son, Kevin McEnroe, sat down for an interview about his new book, but she also discussed her life, which is in a good place after struggling with drugs. She also revealed that she has been dating more women than men lately.
“I like women,” O’Neal said in an extensive interview with People magazine. “I definitely have been dating mostly women recently.” However, when asked about her sexuality, she replied, “I’m not one or the other.”
“I think women are the most amazing creatures on earth,” O’Neal continued. “They're gentle, and also more intelligent than the men that I've met recently. I don't have a steady right now, but I look forward to it.”
O’Neal was married to tennis legend John McEnroe from 1986 to 2002 and they have three children together, including Kevin, 29. Kevin is now a novelist and he just published Our Town earlier this month. Although it’s fiction, it takes inspiration from Joanna Moore, O’Neal’s mother, who also struggled with a pill addiction.
O’Neal struggled with drug abuse for decades, but she told People that she’s doing much better now. “I’m the most content I've ever been. I'm the proudest mother in the history of the world,” O’Neal said.
O’Neal, 51, still holds the record as the youngest winner of a competitive Oscar. She was just 9 when she won Best Supporting Actress for Paper Moon, which co-starred her father, Ryan O’Neal, and was directed by Peter Bogdanovich. She worked with Bogdanovich again last year on She’s Funny That Way.
