'Star Wars': Original Trilogy to be screened in China for the first time

In order to introduce Chinese audiences to Luke, Han and Leia, Walt Disney Pictures has been allowed to screen all six Star Wars movies at the Shanghai International Film Festival in China. It marks the first time that the Original Trilogy will be shown in theaters there.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, this is the 18th annual SIFF, which starts on June 13. Organizers will screen all six Star Wars movies, beginning with The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, which were all released in China when they came out.

However, when the Original Trilogy was released between 1977 and 1983, those films were not shown in China. Therefore, this will be the first time A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi will be seen on the big screen for chinese audiences.

Moves like this make it clear that Disney understands how important China will be for the release of J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Dec. 18. The importance of China has changed significantly even from the time Revenge of the Sith was released in 2005. Variety reports that Avengers: Age of Ultron has already passed $210 million in China after just two weeks and Disney is going to need The Force Awakens to do the same.
