Paramount TV’s ongoing quest to turn every Paramount movie of the last 40 years into a television series has now taken the studio to Urban Cowboy. A series based on the 1980 John Travolta/Debra Winger movie is in the works at Fox.
The project will be a Paramount TV, 20th Century Fox TV co-production, with writer/director Craig Brewer (Hustle and Flow) on board. According to Variety, which first reported on the project, it is only in the very early script stage at this point.
Urban Cowboy was co-written and directed by the late James Bridges and centers on lovers in Texas. It helped continue Travolta’s streak of success that began in the mid-’70s and was one of Winger’s early films. She was even nominated for two Golden Globes for the film.
Paramount TV has a long list of movie-based TV projects in the works, including Minority Report, which will air on Fox this fall. The studio is also developing Galaxy Quest, which doesn’t have a network home yet; Shooter for USA Network; and School of Rock for Nickelodeon.
Brewer’s most recent directing effort was for Paramount, as he made the 2011 Footloose remake. He also produced Katy Perry’s Part of Me documentary.
