While we have to wait until 2018 for the next Avengers movie, it looks like next year’s Captain America: Civil War will be close to a third Avengers. Not only are many of the familiar faces from the Marvel universe returning, but Martin Freeman is also joining the cast.
Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige announced the casting today, but of course, he didn’t say who Freeman will play.
“From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in The Office, Martin's range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us,” Feige said. “We couldn't be more honored or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
Freeman is best known for playing Bilbo in the Hobbit trilogy and Dr. John Watson on the BBC’s Sherlock. He also starred as Lester Nygaard on FX’s Fargo and Tim in the original version of The Office.
Civil War will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo and stars Chris Evans as Captain America once again. The film will also feature Iron-Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). The Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) is also supposed to be making his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, along with Spider-Man, who has yet to be cast.
Daniel Bruhl will be starring as Baron Zemo.
Civil War hits theaters on May 6, 2016 and follows the events of Age of Ultron. Marvel is also releasing Ant-Man on July 17.
