Fans have been calling for a sequel to Unbreakable for years, and now the director is floating the idea of a possible TV series.
Shyamalan has been making the rounds promoting his new show Wayward Pines, and he brought up the idea of possibly doing more Unbreakable in the future. He said that he could see a sequel taking the form of a six episode series on Netflix or HBO, according to IGN.
Could that actually happen? Who knows. But Shyamalan is definitely open to the idea based on this, and it sounds like he's thought about where the Unbreakable story would go from the end of the original movie.
Unbreakable, released 2000, is a superhero drama film about a man who discovers he has superhuman abilities. It's essentially a retelling of the Superman story, and director Quentin Tarantino has described the film as "what if Superman was here on earth, and didn't know he was Superman?"
But given the trajectory of Shyamalan's career, would we even want this? After some big successes with The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, Shyamalan's career has been a downward spiral with The Lady in the Water, The Happening and The Last Airbender, with these later movies doing worse and worse at the box office, as we previously reported. Could returning to one of his early works be what gets Shyamalan back on track, or would he just be destroying a classic?
