It’s been a couple years since Leah Remini revealed the bombshell that she was leaving the Church of Scientology but in a new interview, the former King of Queens star proves it’s a more painful transition than we think.
She left in 2013 amid reports she wanted to leave before the vetting process started for her daughter. She also reportedly questioned some of the controversial church’s practices.
In a new episode of Oprah Winfrey’s Where Are They Now? on OWN, she confirmed she left for the sake of her young daughter, Sofia. Due to the church’s commitments, there was little family time left.
“I don't think people knew the amount of dedication it takes to be in this organization,” she told Winfrey, E! Online reports.
“I mean, it was every day, three-and-a-half hours minimum, seven days a week usually. You know, I'm working most of the time, and then the other time was spent at the church, so minimal time is really spent with your family."
She had an “ah-ha” moment while in Florida, when she saw her daughter swim for the first time, although she admitted it was a “culmination of things” that made her leave.
“A tear came down my face. And I was like, 'What am I doing?'” she admitted.
She added it’s “not just something you get over” though. “It's people and a lifestyle you've known all your life. It formed who I am, good and bad. It formed the way I think, good and bad. And so there's a lot of pain connected to it, there's a lot of healing.”
