Katy Perry starts controversy in China with sunflower dress

Katy Perry’s outlandish outfits are part of her act and always push the boundaries of fashion. But her latest outfit may have also pushed the boundaries of what China can handle. While performing in Taiwan, it appeared that she might be supporting protesters.

Perry was performing in Taipei, Taiwan’s capital city, while wearing a sparkling yellow dress with sunflowers on it and the Taiwan flag as a cape. As Billboard notes, the sunflower was a symbol adopted by protesters last year, who said a Chinese trade agreement wasn’t fair to Taiwan. The Taiwanese flag is also controversial in China, especially as the Chinese government refused to let it fly at the 2012 Olympics.

According to Quartz, local Taiwan media reported that some in the crowd were in tears, believing that Perry really was making a political statement. “Singing with a national flag of the Republic of China. So moving,” one fan wrote on Facebook.

Still, it’s not really clear if Perry was making a political statement, or just thought she was wearing the flag of where she was performing. Her tour for PRISM has always featured sunflower imagery, including the sunflower microphone she used in Taipei. However, Quartz reported that photos of her performance were pulled from Chinese social media sites.

The government on Taiwan is called the Republic of China and has been separate from the People’s Republic of China. However, many governments - including the U.S. - do not recognize Taiwan as its own state, notes The Huffington Post.
