J.K. Rowling apologizes for killing a minor 'Harry Potter' character

Considering how expansive the wizarding world of Harry Potter is, you would think that J.K. Rowling may have forgotten something. But it turns out that she never forgets anything and that includes the death of a minor character. Over the weekend, she even apologized for killing him.

Saturday marked the anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts, which happened in 1998, but took place in the final Potter novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, notes Entertainment Tonight. During the fight, Fred Weasley was killed.

So, on Saturday, Rowling apologized to fan on Twitter for killing one of Ron’s brothers. “Today I would just like to say: I'm really sorry about Fred. *Bows head in acceptance of your reasonable ire*,” she wrote.

Many other characters died during that battle, too, so why didn’t she just apologize for killing them all? Why single Fred out? Rowling quickly answered that, writing that she plans on apologizing for one death a year. “I thought I might apologise for one death per anniversary. Fred was the worst for me, so I started with him,” she wrote.

This isn’t actually the first time Rowling has revealed that she remains disappointed in her decision to kill a minor character. In December 2014, she wrote that she hated killing Florean Fortescue, an ice cream shop owner who was in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
