A guitar used by George Harrison during Beatles live shows in 1963, went for $485,000 at an auction of Rock memorabilia on Friday. It was the most expensive piece sold at the auction, which was held at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York.
Julien’s hosted the auction and expected the guitar to go between $400,000 and $600,000. It is a Maton Mastersound Ms500 electric guitar. Harrison used the guitar in July and August, 1963, including at a show in Liverpool. After the tour, the guitar was returned to Barratts music store and was then bought by guitarist Roy Barber.
Barber did know that the guitar was used by Harrison and he kept it in storage until 2002, when his widow auctioned it off at Sotheby’s.
This is the most recent guitar used by Harrison to hit the auction block. According to Rolling Stone, his 1962 Rickenbacker 425 sold for $675,000 at a Julien’s Auction last year.
Friday’s auction items also included Elvis Presley’s 1967 marriage license to Priscilla Presley, a Michael Jackson glove used in 1994 and Britney Spears’ bra from the “Overprotected” video.
