For many, the latest rape scene on Game of Thrones might just be the last time they ever watch the show. That includes Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri, who tweeted today that she is done with the show.
On Sunday’s episode, Sansa (Sophie Turner) was raped by Ramsay (Iwan Rheon) after their wedding, with Theon (Alfie Allen) forced to watch. It was the latest scene of rape and sexual violence on the show, which is based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books.
However, in the books, the rape scene doesn’t happen, which has caused an even bigger firestorm surrounding it. Indeed, Deadspin’s Tom Ley called the show “gross, exploitative and totally out of ideas.” The Mary Sue’s Jill Pantozzi wrote that the site will no longer promote or write about the show from now on.
Now, McCaskill is quitting the show. “Ok, I'm done Game of Thrones.Water Garden, stupid.Gratuitous rape scene disgusting and unacceptable. It was a rocky ride that just ended,” she wrote.

Despite all the controversy, Sophie Turner told Entertainment Weekly before the scene was filmed that she “kinda loved it.” However, Martin refused to discuss this specific change to his stories.
HBO President of Programming Mike Lombardo told The New York Times that the network is fully supportive of showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
