Fox got a leg up on the other networks by already scheduling the most anticipated returning show of the 2015-2016 TV season. Empire’s super-sized second season returns in September.
The show’s writing team tweeted that the show will be back on Sept. 23. Star Taraji P. Henson also tweeted the date to an anxious fan.
Fox has decided to let the show keep its 9 p.m. Wednesday time slot for the fall, which was an easy decision. The show was the top-rated new series of the 2014-2015 season, even though it didn’t start until the second half of the season.
The first season of Empire, which also stars Terrence Howard, only rean 12 episodes, but season two will feature 18. The first nine will air in the fall, with the second half airing in the winter. Both blocks will run without repeats in between.
Fox also confirmed that Chris Rock, Alicia Keys and Lenny Kravitz will all make cameos on Empire’s second season.
Empire was created by Danny Strong and Lee Daniels, who worked together on The Butler. Strong is also an Emmy winner for HBO’s Game Change and Daniels was nominated for an Oscar for Precious.
