First footage from Quentin Tarantino's 'The Hateful Eight' shown at Cannes

While there was no chance that Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight would be ready for this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Harvey Weinstein still made it the top discussion on the Croisette today by showing a two-minute clip from the film.

The short trailer, which will probably be shown before another Weinstein Company release during the summer and should be online soon, shows that the film should be exactly what Tarantino fans expect from him. It’s a Western, but on a much smaller scale than 2012’s Django Unchained. The characters are stuck at an inn thanks to a snowstorm, so the cast is only a handful of people.

That cast includes Michael Madsen, Samuel L. Jackson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Bruce Dern, Kurt Russell, Walton Goggins and Demian Bichir.

As Indiewire describes, the footage included a montage that proves that there will be plenty of gunplay, despite the cramped quarters. Plus, it looks incredibly beautiful thanks to cinematography from Robert Richardson, who has been Oscar-nominated for his work on Inglorious Basterds and Django. (He also has three Oscar wins, so he knows how to make movies look gorgeous.)

Other first impressions from the screening note that it feels very much like Reservoir Dogs, while Vulture’s Kyle Buchanan noted that there was no Channing Tatum in the trailer.

The Hateful Eight hits theaters in December.
