Disney's 'Cinderella' hits $500 million worldwide

Disney’s latest live-action fairy tale, a new version of Cinderella, has reached a milestone at the box office. The film hit $500 million worldwide.

Cinderella was released in the U.S. and Canada back on March 13 and is still playing in some locations. It came in sixth just last weekend, grossing $2.7 million according to Rentrak data. It is up to $194 million domestically.

The international appeal of the simple fairy tale was on full display in markets like China, Britain, Italy, Japan and Brazil, notes The Los Angeles Times. It grossed $71.1 million in China alone and $29.2 million in Britain. In total, the film has made $308 million in foreign markets.

Cinderella was directed by Thor’s Kenneth Branagh and stars Downton Abbey’s Lily James as the title character. Cate Blanchett plays the Evil Stepmother and Helena Bonham Carter is the Fairy Godmother. It cost $95 million for Disney to make.

It was the third in Disney’s ongoing effort to turn its animated classics into live-action blockbusters, following the success of Maleficent and Alice in Wonderland. Up next is The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast. Plenty of others are in various stages of development.
