July will mark the 60th anniversary of Walt Disney’s most ambitious project since he made a full-length animated film, Disneyland. To begin celebrations for the milestone, Disney Parks is hosting a 24-hour party this weekend. In addition, there are plans for new attractions at the park in Anaheim.
The 24-hour party started at 6 a.m. this morning, reports NBC Los Angeles. Thousands will be spending more than just 24 hours there though, as many lined up outside the gates before it opened.
Chief operating officer Tom Staggs told The Los Angeles Times that Disney is working on new attractions, but none that would force them to close any of the beloved rides that are still there. He hinted that the big push will be to increase the Star Wars presence.
“We will look at Star Wars to be a plus while not taking away from things that people love,” Staggs said.
Of course, ever since Disney bought Lucasfilm, Disney CEO Bob Iger has said that there are plans to add more Star Wars rides beyond the familiar Star Tours attraction. In February, he promised that they are coming soon and that Disney Imagineers have “ambitious” plans for the new Star Wars rides.
While Disneyland will get some changes as part of the 60th anniversary celebration, one thing that isn’t coming to California is the popular MagicBands that are used at Walt Disney World in Orlando. That’s because most Disneyland visitors don’t stay for an extended time and are mostly locals.
