Zachary Levi has been tapped to host Geeks Who Drink, a new game show that will air on Syfy. If you think it involves geeks who drink, you are right.
SyFy announced today that it has greenlit the show, which Levi will also executive produce under his The Nerd Machine with Conde Nast Entertainment and Kinetic Contact.
Each episode will feature two teams of trivia geeks answering pop culture questions. Each team will have a celebrity captain and two trivia pros. After three rounds, a winner will get a spot on the Geeks Who Drink leaderboard and a group of prizes. There will also be a lot of drinking, obviously.
Geeks Who Drink has become a nationwide phenomenon, as over 600 bars host games around the country.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Levi explained that Conde Nast thought the game would make for a good show following a 2012 Wired story about the game. They got Kinetic involved and then Kinetic brought it to Levi to produce. It was suggested that he host, too and he liked that idea.
“Since this was already my baby anyway, I thought, ‘Why not. I’ll do my best Trebek, and have a beer or two,’” Levi told EW. “We want to keep the heart of Geeks Who Drink — the pub circuit — very pure. But we’re also trying to translate that to television, and trying to find ways to do that that are very organic.”
Levi is best known for starring in NBC’s cult series Chuck and will be seen on TV again in Heroes Reborn.
Syfy didn’t set a premiere date for the show yet.
