When Ang Lee wants big stars in his new film, even if it’s just for a cameo, he gets them. The two-time Oscar winner has signed up Vin Diesel and Chris Tucker for roles in Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.
The casting was confirmed on Wednesday by The Hollywood Reporter and TheWrap. It’s not clear who either of them will play, but they probably won’t have big roles.
The film officially got moving in January, with Studio 8, Sony’s TriStar and Film4 agreeing to co-produce. Sony will distribute the film worldwide.
Lee made a point of casting an unknown in the main role and he did just that in February. He cast British actor Joe Alwyn to play the titular character, a young Iraq War veteran who returns home, only to go on a promotional tour that ends at a Thanksgiving Day football game in Texas. His military action will be told through flashbacks.
The other major stars who will appear in supporting roles include Kristen Stewart and Steve Martin.
Diesel just appeared in Furious 7 and hasn’t made any movies outside of the Fast & Furious and Riddick movies in recent years. Tucker has also made few appearances, but was recently seen in Silver Linings Playbook.
The film will be shot in 3D and is based on Ben Fountain’s book. Production starts this month.
Lee’s last film, Life of Pi, won him his second Best Director Oscar. He won his first for Brokeback Mountain.
