Universal Pictures is getting ready to start work on Fifty Shades Darker, the first of two sequels to Fifty Shades of Grey. Studio chairman Donna Langley said that the new film will have a different tone, which will be easy both the writer and director are not returning.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Langley said that Darker will be “more of a thriller.” She also insisted that the version of Fifty Shades that hit theaters in February was the version that both the studio and director Sam Taylor-Johnson wanted, even though Taylor-Johnson isn’t going to helm Darker.
“For the record, the movie we ended up making is exactly the movie I wanted to make and that the studio wanted to make and that our director wanted to make,” she said, likely referencing the reports that Taylor-Johnson and novelist E.L. James clashed.
Kelly Marcel is also not returning to write the script. That job went to James’ husband, Niall Leonard.
“He actually did a draft that wasn't credited on the first movie, and he did a really good job,” Langley told THR.
Even though there is still so much work left to do for Darker, the studio shared an early look at the film last week. There’s also set to be a preview on the Fifty Shades Blu-ray, which hits stores on May 8.
Darker will open on Feb. 10, 2017, followed by Fifty Shades Freed on Feb. 9, 2018. Stars Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson will be back for both.
