Uber driver with concealed weapon shoots gunman who opened fire in crowd

A Chicago Uber driver reportedly shot and wounded a gunman who had opened fire in a crowd in Logan Square Friday night. The driver, whose name has not been reported, will not be charged.

Everardo Custodio, 22, was carrying a pistol and began firing into the crowd of people when the driver, 47, took out a shotgun and shot at Custodio six times. Custodio suffered injuries to his shin, knee and lower back, reports CBS Chicago.

Custodio is being held without bail and was charged with aggravated battery with a firearm and illegal possession of a firearm.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Assistant State’s Attorney Barry Quinn said that the driver did have a valid concealed carry permit and was acting in self defense. The driver will not be charged.

An Uber spokeswoman said that the driver had just dropped someone off when Custodio opened fire. She said that the company does plan on interviewing the driver and the passenger. They did not know that the driver had a shotgun.
