3. “Big Yellow Taxi”
The final three songs here are very hard to put in any sort of order, they are all great songs that have withstood the test of time. So I’ve put them in the order of number of covers that have been made to date of each song.
Mitchell first released “Big Yellow Taxi” in 1970, and enjoyed a better reception in Canada, Australia and the UK than in the U.S. She released a live version in 1974 to a much greater reception in the U.S., peaking at No. 24. According to JoniMitchell.com, there have been 375 covers of this song to date. Covers by The Neighborhood, Maire Brennan, Amy Grant and Counting Crows have also charted.
In 1996, Mitchell told the L.A. Times about the song, “I wrote ‘Big Yellow Taxi’ on my first trip to Hawaii. I took a taxi to the hotel and when I woke up the next morning, I threw back the curtains and saw these beautiful green mountains in the distance. Then, I looked down and there was a parking lot as far as the eye could see, and it broke my heart . . . this blight on paradise. That's when I sat down and wrote the song.”
