“Chinese Cafe/Unchained Melody” is from Mitchell’s 1982 album Wild Things Run Fast. The album returns to the pop music style Mitchell was known for before her jazz experimentation began. The song is a melancholic elegy to the passing of time.
In this song, Mitchell makes reference to a daughter she gave up for adoption in 1965, in the lines: “My child's a stranger / I bore her / But I could not raise her.” Mitchell finally met her daughter in 1997.
